Our composter

Through hands-on work and the creation of a presentation on the importance of composting, the students developed environmental awareness and gained knowledge about sustainable waste management and the

Students participated in a series of practical activities aimed at developing environmental awareness, fostering a responsible attitude toward the environment, and applying the principles of the circular economy.
The students maintained the school flower garden and raised garden beds. Activities included weed removal, soil cleaning and preparation, pruning existing plants, and improving the garden area to provide better growing conditions for plants. Through pruning, dry and damaged plant parts were removed, encouraging healthier growth and greater resilience.
Special attention was given to the construction and installation of a school compost bin. The students assembled the composter and correctly layered the materials required for successful composting: small branches, a small amount of soil, earthworms, and organic waste from the school kitchen. Plant residues such as onion, potato, and carrot peels, as well as cabbage, lettuce, and other vegetable leaves, are regularly added to the composter. The branches improve aeration of the compost mass, the soil introduces beneficial microorganisms, and the earthworms accelerate the decomposition of organic matter and the formation of high-quality humus.
Composting plays an important role in environmental protection because it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, enables the natural recycling of organic materials, and produces valuable organic fertilizer. The resulting compost will be used by the students to nourish plants in the flower garden and raised beds, reducing the need for commercial fertilizers and promoting sustainable plant cultivation.
To further explore the composting process and its significance, the students created a presentation about the importance of compost and its use in the school garden. In the presentation, they explained how compost is produced, which types of waste can be composted, and the benefits of compost for soil and plant health.
During the project, the students also systematically monitor the quantity and composition of organic waste generated in the school kitchen. On a weekly basis, they record the amount of collected organic waste and document its composition, including onion, potato, and carrot peels, cabbage and lettuce leaves, and other plant residues. The collected data enables monitoring of the amount of organic waste that can be used for composting and helps raise awareness of the importance of waste separation and proper waste management.
The implemented activities enabled students to gain practical knowledge about sustainable waste management, the conservation of natural resources, and the importance of responsible environmental stewardship. Through their own work, students learned how organic waste can be transformed into a valuable resource that contributes to a healthier and more sustainable school garden.

Granje omogućuje bolju prozračnost kompostne mase, zemlja unosi korisne mikroorganizme, a gujavice ubrzavaju razgradnju organske tvari i stvaranje kvalitetnog humusa.
Tijekom projekta učenici također sustavno prate količine i sastav biootpada nastalog u školskoj kuhinji.
