OFFLINE IS THE NEW ONLINE

Highschoolers develop a sustainable plan for responsible mobile phone use through realistic steps that reflect young people’s needs and encourage healthy digital habits.

Educational activity is carried out with students in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of the Commercialist, Physiotherapy Technician and Pharmacy Technician programmes, as part of Croatian Language and Media Literacy classes, and is aligned with SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

In the first phase of this sustainable development activity, students are introduced to the concept of sustainability and explore sustainable development projects in their local community and country. They also reflect on their own habits and patterns of digital technology use.

In the second phase, students watch the documentaries "The Smartphone Dilemma", produced by the German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle, which explores how TikTok and Snapchat algorithms affect teenagers’ brains, presents real-life examples of schools and families that have introduced strict restrictions, and explains the psychology behind app design. They also watch "Bez veze" (Media Literacy), a short Croatian documentary in which three secondary school students explore the impact of technology by completely switching off their mobile phones for three days.

Discussion and reflection on the films lead to the third phase: the development of a peer-to-peer, step-by-step digital detox plan for other teenagers. Instead of adopting a radical and difficult-to-implement approach of completely eliminating mobile device use, teenagers develop, by teenagers for teenagers, a plan focused on gradual, practical and sustainable steps towards responsible management of time spent on mobile devices. The plan is based on a participatory approach and reflects the real needs of young people, fostering their active engagement in society, a sense of ownership of the process, and readiness to adopt sustainable habits in the long term.
