Taiwan's governance model is built on radical transparency and genuine citizen participation. What can Europe—and Austria in particular— learn from Taiwan's experience?
What does democracy look like when it isn't reduced to a checkmark every few years? Taiwan has shown that things can be done differently: out of the Sunflower Movement and the civic tech community emerged a form of governance built on radical transparency, broad listening, and genuine citizen participation. In the book "Finding Light Through the Cracks: Reinventing Democracy with Audrey Tang", author Martin Rausch tells this story and distills principles from it that reach far beyond Taiwan.
At the ÖGUT breakfast talk, we'll speak with him and with Jenna Büchy, who—together with Tom Atlee—supported the book's content and language as editor and thought partner, about what we can learn from Taiwan's experience for our democracies in Europe, and in Austria in particular.

Wie sieht Demokratie aus, wenn sie nicht auf das Kreuzchen alle paar Jahre reduziert wird? Taiwan hat gezeigt, dass es anders geht: Aus der Sonnenblumen-Bewegung und der Civic-Tech-Community entstand eine Regierungspraxis, die auf radikale Transparenz, breites Zuhören und echte Bürger:innenbeteiligung setzt. Im Buch „Finding Light Through the Cracks: Reinventing Democracy with Audrey Tang" (deutsche Übersetzung: „Durch jeden Riss fällt Licht") erzählt Autor Martin Rausch diese Geschichte und destilliert daraus Prinzipien, die weit über Taiwan hinauswirken.
Beim ÖGUT-Themenfrühstück sprechen wir mit ihm und mit Jenna Büchy, die zusammen mit Tom Atlee die inhaltliche und sprachliche Gestaltung des Buches als Editorin und Mitdenkerin unterstützte, darüber, was wir aus den taiwanesischen Erfahrungen für unsere Demokratien in Europa und insbesondere in Österreich lernen können.
