Interactive session: "A Symbol of Sustainable Development in Daugavpils: The European Pond Turtle"
The International Project Coordinator of the Daugavpils City Municipality will conduct interactive sessions for 1st, 3rd, and 7th-grade students at the Daugavpils State Gymnasium. As the event's primary goal is to foster international knowledge exchange and share best practices for promoting sustainable development, the focus will be on the "UrbUmbrella" international project (LL-00232), which promotes sustainability regarding biodiversity protection and conservation in cross-border regions.
The sessions will cover the United Nations goals and the principles of sustainability, introduce students to local wetlands and invasive species there, and provide an opportunity to see and identify—in person—the protected European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) and the Invasive red-eared slider (Trachemys scripta). Overall, the sessions will facilitate the acquisition, analysis, and future application of knowledge, encouraging students to adopt more sustainable behaviors.
The European pond turtle has been chosen as a symbol of sustainable development in Daugavpils, as ten turtles were released into the wild in the city's wetlands this summer to restore the local population. The European pond turtle can live for more than 100 years; consequently, several generations following ours may well encounter these turtles.
