As part of the European Sustainable Development Week, 12th-grade students at Ķekava Secondary School will participate in an educational activity focused on integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into their research and project work.
The activity is based on the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, which encourages students to engage with authentic real-world challenges. Students work with sustainability-related topics by exploring global and local issues connected to the SDGs, analysing scientific data, policy documents and international frameworks, and developing evidence-based solutions.
The learning process includes a specially designed worksheet supported by QR codes that provide access to SDG resources, policy documents, sustainability indicators and examples of good practice. Students identify relevant SDGs for their projects, formulate research questions and evaluate the societal impact of their proposed solutions.
Expected outcomes include research papers, presentations, awareness campaigns, data analyses, prototypes or other project outputs addressing sustainability challenges.
The activity promotes systems thinking, critical thinking, responsible citizenship and sustainability competencies. Students gain a deeper understanding of sustainable development while strengthening research, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Experience from previous implementations shows that real-world sustainability topics increase student motivation and engagement. Students report greater clarity, stronger relevance of learning content and more positive learning experiences when project work is connected to global challenges such as the SDGs.
