Hot Spots of Omiš – Exploring How Our City Heats Up
Students explore how green areas, paved surfaces and façade colours affect urban heating in Omiš.

How much do temperatures differ between green and paved surfaces in our city? Do dark façades heat up more than light-coloured ones, and can more greenery help create a more pleasant urban microclimate?
As part of the European Sustainable Development Week, students, together with their teachers Martina Milina, Marina Fistanić and Tamara Banović, will take part in an exploratory walk through Omiš. At selected locations, they will investigate how different surfaces affect the heating of urban areas. They will measure surface temperatures on green and paved areas and compare sunny and shaded locations. Selected GLOBE protocols, adapted to the students’ age, will be used for the measurements.
Older students will present the results of their previous research on the heating of dark and light-coloured façades to younger students. Through practical activities, they will demonstrate how the colour and type of a surface affect the absorption of solar radiation and its heating.
By working together, students of different ages will connect their measurement results with the role of green spaces in reducing urban heat and consider simple solutions that can contribute to a more pleasant and sustainable urban environment.
The activity combines inquiry-based and experiential learning, collaboration among students of different ages, and education for sustainable development, encouraging students to see their city as a place they can explore, understand and help improve.
