This study day is dedicated to two major developments in the protection of climate and the environment:
The advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, clarifying the climate obligations of States;
Recent developments in environmental criminal law, including the introduction of the offence of “ecocide” in the new Belgian Criminal Code, as well as the increasing use of criminal law to address serious and cross-border environmental damage.
At the intersection of international law, climate and nature protection, this study day will provide insight into how these emerging standards are shaping the way we prevent and respond to environmental damage.
