From obligation to value: how can we make sustainability reporting accessible to SMEs?
SMEs face growing expectations to report their sustainability performance despite limited resources. We explore the opportunities, support tools, and key challenges of sustainability reporting.
SMEs are now increasingly being called upon to demonstrate their sustainability performance, driven by their stakeholders — banks, customers and investors — against a backdrop of rapidly evolving regulations.
Whilst these requirements present a real challenge due to limited resources, a lack of expertise and an increased administrative burden, they also offer opportunities: easier access to finance, corporate reputation, attractiveness, and so on. They can also encourage SMEs to manage their sustainability risks more effectively, including within their value chains. To support SMEs, various tools and initiatives have recently been launched or are still under development. These are designed to make sustainability reporting accessible, useful and value-adding for SMEs. The aim is also to help them integrate their duty of care into their operations.
This seminar therefore aims to shed light on the role of SMEs in the transition towards greater sustainability, how they can fulfil this role, and how they can report on their performance. The main challenges they face in this context will also be addressed.

Tegenwoordig worden kmo’s steeds vaker gevraagd om hun duurzaamheidsprestaties aan te tonen, onder impuls van hun stakeholders – banken, klanten, investeerders – en dat binnen een snel evoluerend regelgevingscontext.
Hoewel deze vereisten een reële uitdaging vormen omwille van beperkte middelen, een gebrek aan expertise en een toegenomen administratieve last, bieden ze ook kansen: eenvoudigere toegang tot financiering, bedrijfsimago, aantrekkelijkheid, … Tevens kunnen ze kmo’s ertoe aanzetten om hun duurzaamheidsrisico’s beter te beheren, ook binnen hun waardeketen. Om de kmo’s te ondersteunen, werden er recent verschillende instrumenten en initiatieven gelanceerd of worden momenteel verder ontwikkeld. Deze instrumenten moeten duurzaamheids-rapportering voor kmo’s toegankelijk, nuttig en waardecreërend maken. Het komt er ook op aan hen te helpen om de passende zorgvuldigheid te integreren in hun activiteiten.
Dit seminarie heeft dan ook tot doel om duidelijkheid te scheppen over de rol van kmo’s in de transitie naar meer duurzaamheid, over de manier waarop zij deze rol kunnen vervullen en verslag kunnen uitbrengen over hun prestaties. Ook zal worden ingegaan op de belangrijkste uitdagingen waarmee zij in deze context worden geconfronteerd.
Les PME sont aujourd’hui de plus en plus sollicitées pour démontrer leur performance en matière de durabilité, sous l’impulsion de leurs parties prenantes — banques, clients, investisseurs — dans un contexte réglementaire qui connait une évolution rapide.
Si ces exigences représentent un réel défi en raison de ressources limitées, d’un manque d’expertise et d’une charge administrative accrue, elles offrent également des opportunités : accès facilité au financement, image de l’entreprise, attractivité, …. Elles peuvent également inciter les PME à mieux gérer leurs risques de durabilité, y compris dans leurs chaînes de valeur. Pour accompagner les PME, divers outils et initiatives ont récemment été lancés ou sont encore en développement. Ceux-ci doivent rendre le reporting de durabilité accessible, utile et créateur de valeur pour les PME. Il s’agit également de les aider à intégrer leur devoir de vigilance dans leurs activités.
Ce séminaire vise ainsi à apporter des éclaircissements sur le rôle des PME dans la transition vers une plus grande durabilité, la manière dont elles peuvent remplir ce rôle, et rendre compte de leurs performances. Les principaux enjeux auxquels elles font face dans ce contexte seront également abordés.
