Compost and Biogas: Circular Systems for a Sustainable Future

Our ESDW series shows how compost and biogas support the Sustainable Development Goals – from healthy soils and closed nutrient cycles to renewable energy, resource conservation and climate action.

Compost and biogas: closing loops for a sustainable future

As part of the European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW) 2026, we are presenting a social media series highlighting the diverse contributions of composting and biogas to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Through appropriate recovery and treatment, organic materials can become valuable resources. Composting returns organic matter and nutrients to the soil, supporting soil fertility and sustainable agriculture. Biogas enables renewable energy to be generated from organic material streams. The resulting digestates can also be used as a source of nutrients and returned to agricultural cycles.

Our posts explore the links between composting and biogas and a range of SDGs – from sustainable agriculture, health and clean water to renewable energy and innovation, sustainable communities, responsible resource use, climate action, and the protection of soils and ecosystems.

The series highlights how closing material cycles can contribute to sustainable development. It focuses on the responsible use of resources, the recovery and recycling of nutrients, the generation of renewable energy and the strengthening of regional circular systems.

Compost and biogas connect soil, agriculture, energy and resource protection – demonstrating how the circular economy can contribute to sustainable development in practice.
